His Radiancy’s eyes were fixed on him. Cliopher could not help staring back – there was some unspoken message in the contrast between the set serenity of the Imperial face, and the wide open and imploring look in the lion eyes. It was as though – as though the inner man were close to the surface, close to Cliopher, almost within arm’s reach and yet still so far away.
