Work Text:
Anne was shaken but glad they’d all survived. She hugged Eddie goodbye and gave Venom a fond pat on his snout. Eddie watched her get into Dan’s car and the two of them drove off. They’d been nice enough to give him a lift home. Which was great because he didn’t think Venom was into running home. The symbiote didn’t say it but it was clearly exhausted. The fight had tired it out. Even now, it was slow and sluggish as it curled around his neck.
Venom sighed.
“You okay, V?”
I really thought we would get her, Eddie. She is supposed to be ours.
Eddie smiled sadly, as he watched the car turn the corner. Venom coiled itself into a scarf around his neck. “It doesn’t work that way in real life. It’s not like the movies. The good guy beats the bad guy. The good guy gets the girl.”
But we did beat the bad guy. We saved Anne’s life.
“Yeah, but that’s not enough. She’s—” He took a deep breath. “She’s made a new life with Dan, she’s happy now. I gotta respect that. Yeah, sure, maybe I hate it but I gotta accept it.” It helped to talk about this, to tell Venom. Venom was like a pet, it listened placidly as he vented. “Dan’s okay, he’s got a steady job, he makes he feel safe. That’s what she said to me, can you believe it? What girl wants to feel safe? I — I — Fuck this, V. You’re right. She should be mine."
Ours.
“Fine, yeah, ours. But she’s not. And it sucks.” Something occurred to him. He wasn’t the only one who’d experienced a loss, of sorts. “How about you? Carnage was like your son. It only was born because of your blood.”
Carnage is not my spawn. Carnage is an abomination.
“I don’t know, man, he seems like your average symbiote to me. He’s like Riot. If anything, you’re the abomination.”
I know you’re upset about Anne but there’s no need to insult me, Eddie.
“You’re right. Sorry. How do you feel? You took on another symbiote and lived.”
I’m tired.
“Me too. What do you say we get home, eat some chocolate and watch a movie?”
Are Sonny and Cher still alive?
Eddie rolled his eyes. “You know we can’t keep them indefinitely? But yeah. They’re fine. They — they missed you.”
I missed them too.
