Summary
The children would draw scary faces onto the pumpkin with charcoal, and then their parents would use a kitchen knife to cut out the face. They would open the top and clean the inside of the fruit, and then light a small candle to place inside. At night, the pumpkins’ spooky faces would terrify and delight the children, casting strange shadows from the light within.
Inej hasn’t thought about the pumpkins in years, but now it strikes a chord in her. It’s an apt metaphor for herself, after all.
