Your lips taste like sugar and bad decisions—that is the first thing Luis notices when Max Hatter kisses him again, like he never learned his lesson the first time… or the second… or any of the times in between.
It is not supposed to happen. Not after the fights, not after the things they said, not after they swore they were done. But Max has always been chaos wrapped in charm, all crooked smiles and teasing words that mean too much and not enough all at once—and Luis has never been good at saying no to either, especially when Max looks at him like that.
They tell themselves it is nothing. Just old habits. Just a little fun. No feelings, no promises, no strings. Max says it with a grin, like it is all a game, like he is daring Luis to believe him. Luis pretends he does.
But every stolen glance lingers too long. Every touch burns a little deeper. Every brush of Max’s lips feels intentional, like a question Luis is too afraid to answer. And every kiss tastes like something dangerously close to love, even when Max laughs it off like it is nothing more than sugar on his tongue.

“Looks like your moves don’t work anymore,” Max taunted, craning his neck up at the taller boy.
Luis only smirked back, unfazed. “Drop the act, Max. You and I both know those moves worked on you just fine. No one’s buying the cold shoulder.”
“Oh, so the big boy can speak now?” Max pointed a finger off toward the distant hills. “What do they feed you up on that mountain, Madrigal? Extra hay?”
Luis scoffed at his ex-boyfriend. God, it was pathetic how much he still missed him. “Why don’t you just keep it moving, Hatter?” He stepped directly into Max’s space, leaning down so his breath brushed Max’s cheek. “I’m sure this prep has plenty of chaos waiting for you to cause, right, Maxie?”

The walk to his new room after he had shaken Pink off of his trail was silent at the very least. They hadn’t told him who his new roommate(or guard dog, to be more precise) would be, but he was a bit excited. Maybe it would be someone he had never met before. Maybe someone who lived under a rock for their entire life and had no idea who he or his father was
Max knocked at the door which quickly swung open.
“Hi! I’m Luis Madrigal,and-,” the tan, sadly familiar, boy shut up after seeing Max. He seemed dumbfounded.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Luis said.
