So many firsts happened at similar events, all dipped in shadows and molded by neon—stolen kisses, frantic hands, and the ache of a heat long since burned down to ash inside of him. If he concentrates, he can still taste the cloying sweetness of alcohol on his tongue and the ripple of whatever drug under his skin, feel the heavy heat of someone else’s body against his own. It’s a familiarity he gave up a long time ago, and one he stopped wondering if he would ever have again.

He hadn't actually left, had he? He was hiding. Why was he?... He couldn't remember.
It was like a murmur, a soft crackle just behind his back. At first, it fell to deaf ears, but it quickly turned into a succession of hollow cracks of something falling apart. Shouto didn't cry out when he was thrown back into the hollow of the tree along with the debris of the decaying bark. He didn't try to hold on to the roots or the grass. It was as if everything was happening slowly, toppling into the darkness as steps echoed painfully inside his head.
With any luck, he’ll pass out when he hits something hard enough.
