“Carm.”
He opens his eyes. It’s Richie, crouched in front of him. His face is painted with guilt and panic and he looks more worried than Carmen has ever seen him look.
“Carm, you’re not breathing,” he says, and it’s more of a command than it is an observation. Carmy wishes he could, but he just doesn’t know how. He doesn’t know how to tell Richie, or make it known that he doesn’t want to feel this way. He just does. “Snap out of it, Carm. I know you know how to breathe. You’re a fuckin’ human. We breathe, Carm. That’s just what we do.”
It almost makes Camry laugh. Richie being so blatantly Richie in the face of crisis, keeping Carmen anchored by just being himself.

In which Carmy takes up running to clear his head. He lets his thoughts pile up until the day the dam will break.
The dam finally breaks.
