And so it was, on the occasion of his taking the mantle as head of the family and manager of their fortunes, at the reception meant to honor him, Belar Jocan found himself gifted what he neither needed nor wanted: a "songbird", as his would-be ally, Lady Vendove, named him, promising that he would sing.
Belar — who did not wish to be head of the family, and who certainly did not want another mouth to feed — nevertheless finds himself in possession of one.
Of course, the fact that Tath cannot sing and has no intention of behaving sweetly but of, instead, escaping as soon as allowed is no obstacle, and Belar has no objection to letting him go free as soon as his clipped feathers moult and are replaced.
No objection, that is, before he comes to know him...

At present, while they sat in the Executive Sector cafeteria having lunch, Darling was once again observing Trench’s wings. Trench held them tightly against his back as he picked his way through dinner, posture as tense as ever. He hated to have his wings touched, at least by anyone who wasn’t Darling, and did his best to keep them thoroughly out of anyone’s path.
He also seemed to have been trying his best to pull out as many of his feathers as possible.
