Minjeong turns her face to the sky. “God,” she whispers when the stars blur sharp and too close. “God, forgive me.”
“No,” Jimin says, voice raw. She’s going to die like this. “Don’t ask Him for that.”
Minjeong turns to her, eyes salted, shattered electric. “I’m not,” she shudders, anoints Jimin’s forehead with spit and light. “I’m asking you.”
Small towns know too much and forgive too little. Their latest eschatological parable goes like this: the sunburnt storm and the golden lamb find each other nineteen and knee-deep in creekwater, learn something of thistle itch and fever hymn. Bruised halos and wildfire lips, they waste their fathers’ diesel to transgress across county lines.
It’s a hard lesson for a homily now, but the origin is awfully simple. Minjeong prays for something holy. Jimin answers with an open mouth.
