And then Max catches sight of a woman with big eyes, a hint of a gentle smile on her lips. She darts her eyes past her friend to where Max and Lupe are sitting and their eyes meet. It’s just for a moment, a flick of eye contact, but Max feels like the floor is dropping out beneath her, as the woman’s face starts to open up into a full smile, the apples of her cheeks gliding to accommodate an easy grin.
