Inanna paused at the second gate, her head held high, her gaze not wavering. She had already shed a scarf, long and thin and of little comfort in the land where the rays of the sun did not reach.
What need did she have for the bright jewels of heaven as she descended below? They were but a piece of what she held, and they were nothing Ereshkigal could claim.
She removed her bracelets, her earrings, her necklace and handed them piece by piece to the grim-faced guard.
Inanna did not speak; she only walked forward onward to her goal.
