Summary
“Hey, hey, you wanna know whose hands he wouldn’t mind?”
Sae shifts. Shidou sets a thumb to his chin and fixes Rin with a mockingly pensive look, the seriousness of it severely offset by his shit-eating grin. “Aww, is it mee, Rin-Rin?”
“Die in a ditch,” Rin spits, and this time it takes Nanase alongside Karasu to hold him down.
“Nanase-chan?” Shidou continues to tease, and Nanase goes red all the way up to his ears, jerking his hands away from Rin like he’s been burnt. “Ooh, maybe—”
Rin lunges for him, and Karasu doesn’t even try to stop him this time, shaking his head with an amused huff. Shidou’s laughter echoes out past Rin’s hand on his mouth.
“Karasu-chan!” he exclaims, much too loud with Sae right there, watching them all, and for multiple reasons his face flushes with heat.

“What makes you think I’d even agree to live with you?” Rin declared, causing the first waver in Sae’s eternal stoicism.
Rin saw the slight twitch in his brother’s eyebrows, the discreet bob of his Adam's apple as he swallowed, and the flash of hurt in his icy stare. It was subtle, but Rin was perceptive, and the recognition filled him with guilt.
He had hurt his brother.
Sae glanced through the window.
“I didn't think you hated me that much,” he admitted.

Summary
Sae was popular. That was a plain fact that nobody could argue against. Rin was even somewhat proud of it – Sae's value being recognized by everyone, even people who didn't understand a lick of football was a great thing. Despite rejecting every Valentine's gift, his shoe locker was often full of chocolates and letters when the day hit and, sometimes, students showed up on match days to cheer for him, but Sae always dismissed everyone – the only chocolates he accepted were their mother's and Rin's back when he made some in preschool, and he didn't even glance at his fans while playing – so Rin had assumed he didn't accept confessions either.
To put it mildly, it came off as a shock.
Or: Rin (almost) realizes some things. Almost. Not really.
