It occurs to me that Reynir could teach himself the basics of battle magic by studying the books. There must be books for basic, intermediate and advanced courses as well as famous mages' printed memoirs. These plus his own experience would make him a respected professional.
I wonder how much they've rediscovered about magic. Imagine a magic research lab, where they try to figure out exactly what stave lights up when enemies approach...
