edit: and a commenter above me saying "The skull breaking is the perfect level of horror for this canon, somewhere between entirely banal and utterly terrifying in the tone of the narration, left up to the reader to figure out where the character thinks it lies." is so right and true that I didn't even flinch at it, feeling it perfectly fitting in with Muir's world and with the mundane yet still heartbreaking violence of Nona & Hot Sauce's lives. so really really really good
