“Everyone deserves a chance to live.” Silver nodded thoughtfully to himself.
“Even someone who’d kill you without a second thought?”
“What, like you?”
Shadow had no response to that.
I really like how Silver is kind-hearted but not a fool. If an allegedly dangerous beast has been roaming around for so long and hasn't attacked anyone or caused any trouble yet, it is unreasonable to go after someone that's clearly trying to make a living.
We clearly know who the werewolf is, but it's refreshing to not see Sonic front and center from the very beginning. His reluctance to let Shadow touch him and his defense of the children when Shadow pulls out the knife shows his humanity and heart even if Shadow is still stuck in his thinking.
Also, Shadow is kind of a scumbag in this, even if I get his reasoning. Makes me wonder if he killed any other harmless beasts before any sort of reasoning with them, and if they didn't have anyone to stand up for them like Sonic does.
Yesss I'm so happy you liked this exchange, it's one of my favourites so far! And Silver's definitely a reasonable sheriff, he wants the best for his people!
Sonic is a risky guy, but he still has to get to know Shadow a little more before he starts making assumptions of his character. He seems to have a lot of confidence in Shadow's potential for change, despite his delinquent attitude.
Shadow certainly isn't the most merciful hunter around... but perhaps there's a reason for that...? Hmm... :)
