Oh good question! In military naval judicial systems, a “mast” or captains mast is a form of nonjudicial punishment (NJP in the Marines) goes back to the Age of Sail when a captain, who has total authority over his ship, had authority to dole out justice against minor(ish) offenses that may not hit the thresh hold for a court martial.
In the modern Navy/maritime services, a Mast usually means the end of the career, especially for officers, who are expected to be a higher caliber. So Jee was never taken to Mast—IE officially punished, but he never promoted as a result of his actions.
