Hence why I just did a little retcon to that whole scene. It was just bad writing and bad exposition. In our timeline, Jaune knows what Aura is and gives a rote answer to Pyrrha's question, and bluffs that he wanted "A real challenge" in taking the test without it. Pyrrha offers to unlock it, and Jaune is very, VERY grateful and sincere.
