      My guess would be that the soldier would have died from gamma poisoning. From my understanding (I could be completely wrong) but the serum used on Bruce was used with gamma rays rather than vita-rays (which they used on Steve). Because of Bruce's genetic mutation thing that allows him to process/store gamma radiation, he's able to become the Hulk. As the solider most likely wouldn't have that mutation, he probably would have died.

      Again, I could be completely wrong. But that's just my understanding of it :)
