I know you asked about the formatting on that "places where the words don't reach" bit and I, in typical recent fashion, wasn't back in time to promptly respond, so I want to dwell on it a little more and just gush over how appropriate it is for this story--for it to be a gap within the story that is in itself taking place in the gaps and margins of the official history and for the typography to bring home the literalization of the writing that's the essence of the whole thing. I love it. And I love the ring bleeding ink, the perfect and distinct horror image; love Eliza giving succor to Burr and remembering Theodosia's pregnancy; love the almost prophetic roll of that last section here.
But not as much as I love your Eliza! This is the novel she and Philip deserve, full of weight and drama and prickliness--I know I said this in the doc, but I still love Eliza's snappishness with Angelica here, those bits of imperfection from both of them--and opportunities for both heroism and consequences. This is a much, much more impressive work than Rivers/Guns, and I'm just so honored as a writer and delighted as a reader that I got to help lead to it. (And see bits of it before other people--IN YOUR FACE, OTHER PEOPLE.) <3333
Yaayyy, I'm so glad that you liked the typography! I figured if there ever was a story to bend the rules of formatting, it would be this one, for precisely the reasons you said <3
Nice catch on Eliza remembering Theo's pregnant-- she has that social politician's-wife intelligence to realize what's up with Burr and the selflessness to want to help. I think she did it just as much for Theodosia as she did for Aaron, tbh. I think the fundamental thing about Angelica and Eliza is that they're sisters and they're going to be there for each other no matter what... which means both of them, Eliza especially, are a little more, uh, free with their negative emotions with each other. But hopefully it also came across that the reason they can do that is precisely because of the love they know they have.
As for this being more impressive than Rivers/ Guns... well, I think that's apples-to-oranges and Rivers/Guns is one of the best things to ever come out of the fandom. But I'm stupendously honored by the comment and I'm so glad you're excited for what's coming up <3
