That does sound like a neat plotbunny! Would Ostaros never have met Kup? If not, would he have still developed his moral compass? If so, would he have confronted Mesothulas about the horrible things he did? If so, does he, once again, get shot in the back by his mentor? I think you should run with it.
I've not seen IDW Transmutate, but the BW ep was one of my favorites. Brought more than one tear to the eyes.
