WHAT THE HELL???? Oh my God, I was a total mess after this chapter and the second my feelings start to level out OLIVIA GETS KIDNAPPED???? Not cool dude, I’m going to be even more on edge than Jacques was this chapter. Is this something to do with the person in VFD? I mean it seems fairly obvious, but I’m slightly afraid it’s a red herring or will come into play later. I really enjoyed your theory as to what happened with Lemony, it seems to make sense of why Esmé married Jerome (giving purpose to why she’d need access to his underground tunnel network) as well as why Jerome didn’t listen to what Beatrice’s warnings about her; if he were involved in the V.F.D. he may have known what Beatrice did (they were close after all) and not trusted her completely, even if he respected her bravery in doing so. Assuming the story you posed is your own beliefs as to what the Sugar Bowl may contain and not just something that fits the current narrative- do you believe that the Sugar Bowl contains some kind of accelerant or maybe the recipie to Greek Fire? Or do you believe its properties are more mythical in nature? I always assumed it was some form of a key or maybe a USB drive equivalent with secrets about the VFD known to very few, but I like your idea that it is related to causing fires more. It makes it somewhat more urgent to possess the Sugar Bowl in that case. Anyway, now that I’ve finished that tangent, back to my aching feels! I adore this trope to pieces but it really upset me to see how miscommunication affected the children so much. These kids need a loving and stable home more than anything and while I understand that Jacques is hurting very badly, it seems really unfair that Olivia is forced to put a face on in the wake of her own pain and just get on with things. Yes, it could be argued Jacques has more on his plate but the Quigley and Lemony situations were taking place prior to their marriage and didn’t seem to affect his general demeanour then. This isn’t a criticism of your writing, quite the reverse- it adds a dimension of realism where the man is allowed to be angry and the woman is not. What’s great about your story is not only how you demonstrated how this affects everyone else, but how it can be dealt with and how it is absolutely wrong to behave so and that he recognises that. I’m finished now, I promise! (Until the next time anyway!) Absolutely brilliant, throughly enjoyed (even as my heart squeezed!)
I know! I've left some clues about the woman in VFD... but a lot will be revealed in the next chapter.
About the Sugar Bowl. Oh goodness... I actually *just* finished that bit.
I think the children being affected by their problems is really rock bottom for both of them. Olivia has quite a bit of bagage and I don't think she's fully realized yet just how lonely she's been for most of her life until she wasn't anymore. She is terrified of losing her newfound family again. For Jacques the issues with Quigley and Lemony have been there before, but then it only affected himself. Now he has a family to take care of and that family is increasingly growing more important to him.
On the one hand they are this perfect, fluffy family, but on the other hand, it takes a lot of hard work as well.
