I read this with the same unnerving sensation as reading a horror story where a man slowly loses grip of his own mind and soul and ultimately winds up in the bad ending. Dear god, this was brilliant, but it just clicked how terribly wrong everything had gone when even Tharkay left, and I felt so bad for Laurence. It read as though he died when he agreed to stay in France, and the rest was just a confused haze of a restless afterlife, as if he had een cursed from ever finding peace for what he had done.
I still wonder about this little red man who predicted Bonaparte's turning points, and that strange man who was shouting 'Disaster!' after them in the garden. A little red man. What a strange phrase. In any case, thank you so much for this piece, and for all the pieces you've made for the Temeraire fandom! I read the books so long ago, long before I realised 'fandom' existed, so it has been a real treat finding all your stories in the archive.
