Well, of course I know Sam is the injured one, but he is emotionally damaged. He doesn't think he's good enough/young enough for her, and it torments him. Sam's wounds will heal, but emotionally the two of them are screwed up royally. She's the one always pushing him away though, so really I blame most of their problems on her, though he's not totally blameless. I think if she'd said anything about wanting to be with him (to him, not to a machine), he'd have retired in a heart beat for the chance to be happy again. It's late, and I'm feeling sappy.
I agree on the traumatic brain injuries. It's really the only explanation.
