   I always headcanon-ed that Presto wanted to be a stage performer but suffered horrid stage fright.

   (Which expresses itself in the show when he gets flustered and the hat messes up, but if you notice whenever he 'gives up' or says 'I never get what I want' he gets exactly what he *needs* so the hat responds to his subconscious on some level, especially when he's calm or focusing very hard.)

   So when he gets home he has that confidence and things that seemed to bother him just don't anymore. Compared to escaping Venger or Tiamat, normal high school concerns are totally meaningless.
