Toby is the inspiration and aspiration for all creators of the modern age, myself included. He's tricky, he weaves the sweetest memes out of expectations, and he plays his audience like a pack of millions of fiddles. In fact, I say someone should organize a thorough combing of his Earthbound Halloween Hack. Maybe there are more secrets for his sprawling Undertale-verse in there, in the code or something. It is the origin of the most iconic music piece in the game's deep-diving fandom, Megalovania. I would be very not surprised to find, I don't know, Sans chiding you for digging around in there.
How worth it the Jevil fight is depends on if you like challenges. It is an utterly unique battle, but it's a real gut puncher. Even with three party members, it plays on all of them to beat him in the not-violent way, so even one falling hampers your progress significantly. It's a good showing of how he can twist the battle system to keep up intrigue after this "chapter one."
(And good on the UT fandom, both for the already swell fan art and respecting His Lordship's wishes. See, Atlus, this is how you request silence regarding spoilers, with built up respect between creator and fans. Not with a copyright hammer.)
I wouldn't go that far. The Halloween Hack was released in 2008. Obviously he had quite a few ideas at the time for Undertale by then, but I'm not sure he could have implemented Sans into the game. He mostly used existing resources from Earthbound and added only a few of his own personal touches, inclueing Megalovania. Oh, I'm definitely taking on Jevil. Although I bave to wonder if his name is pronounced like evil or devil. I want all the secrets. Plus I wanted to play through the game anyway. I...kind of stopped Ralsei from telling the legend the first time through, and I feel really bad about it, but at the time, I didn't know he was the fluffiest boy, so now I want to actually listen to his story this time. The thing you need to understand about ATLUS' whole spoiler prevention crusade is that it's a matter of cultural differences. Yesterday, when Deltarune first came out, I already saw someone I follow for some reason I can't remember posting a video about it before the 24 hour mark. Earlier, I read a post about how pretty much all Japanese youtubers playing the game premiered their walkthroughs today at 1 am, the exact time Toby asked people to wait until they could discuss Deltarune. That being said, it's still kind of ludicrous for a major gaming company to force people to not post videos or anything about the game past a certain point for so long, especially when said game had been delayed for years by then. And this brings me back to the subject of Mitsuo Kubo and the symbolism behind his character. I love ATLUS for the amazing stories and gameplay they put into their series, but it's clear they don't respect their fans as much as they should, especially comparing them to some American fans.
Mostly hyperbole there, but... Wow, 2008? Who knew the fan game you could've been playing in ye olde days would be a creative stepping stone to the thing that sucker punched all gaming discussion for a year and a half.
Pronunciation-wise, you'll get exactly how to once you see him. His name is two common words smashed together, so as soon as you know those two words, it'll click. I won't say what they are, though. It's not what you'd expect from a super boss. (You know, I expected Susie to slam that legend talk down, so I said yes to hearing it not actually expecting to hear it. I was kind of amazed she wasn't a complete douche-waffle for half a second. This was after she almost bit a face off and before Lancer softened her up, remember.)
You'd think, after all these years, Atlus would kind of know there's a difference between American and Japanese players. I remember how people over here went about posting all of the spoilers even faster specifically to spite Atlus overreaching their authority and misusing Youtube's copyright system. Well, I should say threatening to misuse the system, because I never heard a case of them enforcing the restriction. Maybe the righteous backlash was too hot to handle.
Toby, meanwhile, only asked politely for a one day period, which is reasonable. I'm glad I had that buffer, because if it hadn't been in place, I might have seen some artwork of Ralsei without the heavy shading before realizing what his name rearranges to. (There really is some nice artwork already. Like, guys, you are why Toby puts up with our bull. Keep up the good work. Especially that guy who made a comic of Kris turning the HUG command against Ralsei. Massive mood, my dude.)
Oh, okay I see what you mean. Also, FUCK THIS PIECE OF SHIT BASTARD IN THE ASS, HE CAN GO SUCK A DICK IN THE DEEPEST PITS OF HELL. Now with that out of the way, I probably shouldn't have promised myself I would beat this guy, because I'm not that good at the whole dodging thing, which is why I mainly relied on Susie and Ralsei to guard or heal while Kris used ACT to get the fight done quicker. The problem with that is that you need to use up everybody's turn to fmget him tired, but since it takes so much TP, I have to guard on everybody more than every other turn. Not only that, but the whole system of gaining TP by narrowly dodging attacks, while very cool in every other situation, is ultimately my downfall, because Jevil's attack are patterned in a way that one simple misstep could mean the complete decimation of your entire team, turning your attempt to get more TP into a trap that doesn't let go no matter how hard you struggle. Then there's the matter of healing, which is so stupid. Most of the time, he targets everybody, and does massive damage, and when you're not defending or haven't lowered his attack, you usually end up getting back just as much damage as you did before trying to heal. It would be easier if tmyou could actually get more Revive Mints or team healing items, but no shop sells either of those. I mean there's the spinning baker, but he only gives you a new Spin Cake if you've already used the one you have. Ultimately, my only option is to get better at dodging his attacks, and I've come to realize that people were right to find Sans hard, because the heart is harder to control than it looks.
Join me in this emberous hatred! Let this fool know our rage!
And by that, I mean exchanging tactics so we can collectively get closer to putting him in his place. I found a good method for dodging the first round of Devilsknives, at least. You see how they make a square. Stay towards the middle of the square's sides, locking yourself against the wall of the dodging space. You'll only get hit then if you get caught off guard when the spinning speeds up or slows down. It gets trickier the second time he pulls that move out, because he adds big red scythes that cleave through the middle of the box while the others are spinning around.
The carousel is getting a little easier, too. It's a sine wave that moves up and down. Map the gap between waves, accounting for vertical movement, and you're good. It's still hitting for big damage, though, especially once he adds the rows of ducks to the ride. At least it feeds the TP meter by always putting you within inches of an attack.
Here's something to cool the rage a little. After you use the pirouette, look at Kris. They're actually doing it! I love all the little animations for the party. If only this action didn't have a chance of making the dick waffle hit harder.
Back to battle aid, he has a fake out trick, just like Sans when he invites you to get dunked. It's more a psychological trap than a mechanical one, though. He'll act tired, only to unleash a brutal barrage on his next turn, so don't let your guard down when he starts to sag. That's only the halfway mark. The attacks get more ridiculous from there.
The Soul is a weighty little booger, I agree. It doesn't move as fast as you think it would, getting you in trouble when you overestimate where it will be. It doesn't help that your eye can get lost between the hearts, diamonds, knives (which he certainly doesn't run out of), and especially those circular spades.
You know, I'm getting the feeling that this guy is a mashup of three bosses from Undertale. I'm sure no one with an interest in not getting spoiled would still be reading this far down, but just in case, SPOILER ALERT, INCOMING THEORY CRAFTING FOR DELTARUNE. FUTURE READERS BE ADVISED. That out of the way...
It's like Sans, Flowey, and GoHD Asriel had a demon baby. He pulls Sans's tiring out trick in the middle of the fight, on top of being an optional challenge you subject yourself to by going out of your way specifically to fight him. He has a sequence where the standard UI falls away for one big super attack, which also employs an attack pattern similar to the nukes in the Omega Flowey fight. And don't tell me that him chuckling over your misery while he taunts you and uses voiced lines doesn't remind you of a certain daisy douche. (And throw in Undyne the Undying, since his diamond attacks remind me of her spears.) He's a remix of the big boys from Undertale, and I love how much I hate him. Gonna kick this son of a jack in his jinglers, eventually. I AM DETERMINED.
Update: I GOT HIM! FINALLY, HECK YEAH BROSKI! And that extra story info you get for it, totally worth it. If you haven't beaten him, little hint, go back to the old shopkeeper after you finish him off for details that might give you some insight into what the HIFL's going on.
That last boss was absolutely nothing compared to the Jevil. Though Lancer's old man did give a good peek under the hood, so to speak. If one of the themes of chapter 2 onwards is going to be questioning the power of pacifism, I'm even more on board than I was before. And then that last cutscene hit, and I was firmly locked into my seat, because HOLY FU-
Sans: language.
...HOLY FUBERKNUCKLE THE DEMON's BACK. Are we actually going to confront our own Shadow, as gamers, this time around? Are they going to be the big evil we can't just talk down, as promised by the confrontation with the ex-King? I am ready for this hype train.
