Okay, this is really cool... I have to share it with you. The following is a comment on this blog post: http://www.jasoncolavito.com/blog/who-goes-to-the-mountains-of-madness
Maybe a little late reply, but it's always interesting to see how one idea inspired another.
Edgar Allan Poe got his inspirations about The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket from various sources.
Poe in turn was one of the main inspirations of Lovecraft's Mountain of Madness.
In turn it inspired Who goes There?
Who goes there got A: E. Van Vogt into science fiction writing again. It inspired him to write a story himself. It was rejected (but later published in another issue), but he was encouraged enough to write Black Destroyer, the first of the Voyage of the Space Beagler adventures.
Space Beagle appears to have been one of the inspirations behind Forbidden Planet.
Forbidden Planet was one of the things that inspired Roddenberry to create Star Trek. Both Star Trek and Forbidden Planet was amongst the things that inspired George Lucas to create Star Wars.
And Star Wars has inspired countless others.
Not that such stories wouldn't have been written sooner or later anyway, but there is still a long line of domino bricks leading back to earlier tales.
Haha. Not surprising! It's very hard to find an entirely "original" idea. Almost everything is inspired in some way by a previous piece of media, even if it claims not to be. Lovecraft especially has shaped a lot of fiction, especially horror and fantasy/sci fi. Too bad, from what I've heard, he was a real crummy person himself.
