Another favourite thing of mine in these story so far -- Ron's mental juggling between being a 22-year-old occupying his 14-year-old's body. This is super cool in all the ways you show it: Ron shuffling through words in his head to settle on simpler words that a teen (specifically, the teen that people see when they look at Ron Weasley) would use; Ron reading the insecurities and emotions that percolate in his interactions with people, because he now has that perspective on life and dealing with unhappiness; Ron's fucking angst at seeing his dead friend again (quickly tempered by the realisation of oh yeah, it's fourth year; but also how he knows that they make up eventually and can't help but look back on their spat with a sort of fondness).
Competent Ron is also so much my thing, ahhhh. It's oft far too easy to write him off as the comedy relief set dressing, but he's observant! he learns and he cares so deeply for people around him, and seeing his familiarity with the different calming/sleepless/healing potions and the combat/survival spells was heartbreaking for someone that young (but also very satisfying).
eta also Snape's weird moment of sympathy to a 14-year-old who (he thinks) has been preparing himself in all these ways to support a heroically-focused best friend intent on self-destructing if it means saving the world? that was neat
Yessss glad you liked that. So many stories have the character sort of seem to forget -- way too swiftly, IMO! -- what body they're in. I can see that happening eventually, though.
Snape's weird moment of sympathy is one of my favorite parts, because even as I was writing it, I was thinking to myself, "as Snape, what am I seeing, what is my point of view here?" and then suddenly I realized Severus would look at this tiny kid trying so hard and feel genuine empathy and realize that this was one of the rare occasions it was necessary to let his more human side show.
What's weirder is that Snape is right: Ron is, as you say: a fourteen-year-old who has been preparing himself in many ways to support a heroically-focused best friend intent on self-destructing. All we're missing is that he spent seven more years preparing than Snape is aware, and left all he loved behind to save Harry from himself.
