Thanks! yes, she can't ever enjoy herself, I think in part because at that age girls feel as though they should already be embroiled in a romance for the ages... especially girls like Hermione, who have probably read about such sweeping romances again and again and envisioned themselves as the heroine.
I think the Yule Ball will always be the set of her thwarted expectations. You can have the right dress and the right makeup and someone important on your arm and still not have things fall out as you've planned.
