The native American and white joke was hilarious to me!! Maybe it was because he's smart enough to not play into stereotypes but you cant help but dwell on them sometimes.
Book is a storehouse of miscellaneous information...some more useful than others :). His curiosity is also likely to get the better of him even when it may not be the best thing to vocalize...which probably says something that even he knew not to bring up the scars around Loki's mouth.
