Comment on Adrien, Agreste No Longer

  1. IMHO Tom and Sabine as presented in canon fall firmly into the 'parents as people' trope. For those challenges/problems Marinette faces that they are aware of, they provide support as best as they can. Its just that a lot of the more serious problems happen to be things they're not aware off (especially Marinette's Miraculous activities and how they impact her civilian life). This is distinctly different from Intentionally Neglectful/Abusive parents like Audrey and Gabriel*. And as much as people like to bring up the whole 'bakers' daughter' thing in fics, being a baker is certainly not something to be ashamed of, especially in France.

Near as I can, practically all fics which apply the BioDad (and its always the dad) trope to Marinette are super salty fics that do this to make her super special and have her use her newfound status to 'punish' whoever the author is particularly salty with (more often than not, its everyone in the class except the one character the author likes with special attention give to Alya and Adrien). Weather or not Tom is seen as an inadequate dad is never even brought up, its always all about the salt.

When applied to Adrien, its exactly like you said, Adrien gets a better family and is allowed to hate Gabriel without feeling guity.

*Yes, both Audrey and Gabriel are very guilty of being emotionally abusive towards Chloe and Adrien. Gabriel also appears to be attempting to make Adrien emotionally dependant on him, which is even worse.

    1. Absolutely. Tom and Sabine might not be perfect, but they are doing their honest best to raise Marinette. And, if it weren't for the miraculous thing, they would be doing a phenomenal job at it.
