    This is a really well written fic. Not only did you sell the pairing, you managed to do so in a way that felt true to Joss’ character, which I was having trouble imagining given the limits of the prompt. The way you reimagined the characters and their relationships was also well done – not exactly the same, but close enough that you can see the ghosts of the strands from the show. (I do have to wonder if the man in grey used to work for John Dee, though.)

      Um. Why John Dee, though? I think we're closer to the other end of the 17th century, timewise, and I'm not sure why an assassin would work for a mathematician? (Well, he was also an imperialist, but still). *frowns* I'm missing a reference, aren't I?

        I had a half remembered connection between Dee and spying (and hence 'Reese's' former occupation as a spook). Looking into it, I'm not entirely incorrect (and, in fact, the 007 of Bond legend came from his codename), though Walsingham would probably have been a better choice for the time period. Still, Dee certainly tried to talk to angels, which might not be a bad time-appropriate substitute for The Machine.

        I may be *way* over-thinking this, though. Especially as you've intimated that your story isn't Elizabethan. :)

        I blame reading the wrong sort of books.

          Huh. I didn't know that! Well, I knew about the angels, he shows up a lot in urban fantasy and anything mentioning enochian, but I'd never heard he was connected to spying. Cool! *grins* Thanks for that little nugget!

            And I'm a little amused that the second Carter/Morgan story I've found has been posted just over a week after I posted the first part of the first. It seems that I've got a lot to live up to. :) (Especially with the chemistry - all the two of them want to do at the moment it bicker. It's very sad.)
