Haha, I am waiting impatiently for updates! ;) And yeah, it doesn't make sense, but apparently very few people think far enough to realise pink should be scary/an indication of battle prowess, etc, and not "weak" or "embarrassing". Do you have that essay up somewhere to read? :D
Ah, thank you! And that was really interesting and fun! And basically mirrored my thought-process a little as well (as a point, at least in one picture a G1 version of Vortex is partly pink)! And I love that Arcee = energon colour map, funny. xD
It's not perfect, but I adore much of Dreamwave (though not their business practices)! The entire Sunstorm arc was just brilliant, and it shows. If you read a G1 fic, Sunstorm will have his DW characterization 75% percent of the time, even if the rest of the fic keeps exclusively to the G1 cartoon canon. I'm heartbroken that the company imploded just before they got to explore the female Autobots thing.
And they kept Jetfire's G1 cartoon backstory! I can't not love them for that.
Haha, yeah, the first volume of the G1 is... ahem. But I like the rest pretty much, and the whole of last volume (Sunstorm, the Insecticons) is love.
I admit, I don't really like fanon Sunstorm, because they do horrible mashups and the zealotry isn't even... the "right" flavour for me. But yes, it would have been awesome if they couldn't have had such terrible business practices. :/
Ahaha, yes, kept it, and elaborated on it! c: I love Jetfire.
Read your essay. One thing I've found a lot in TF stories is how often human traits are applied to them. Plus, when they're written pre-Earth, I've seen a lot of stories which write them with the same types of alt-modes they have on Earth (wheels, headlights, etc.). But if you see the 1st episode of G1, there's a scene which shows WJ and Bumblebee in their Cybertronian alts and they look more like hovercars, nothing like Earth vehicles at all. My guess, the notion of pink being embarrassing to even Cybertronians is just another example, and as you said, it really is kind of silly or doesn't even make sense.
And if they really did bring in femme characters to appeal to girls, I was watching that before they did. Sci-fi/fantasy cartoons were always something that appealed to me and it didn't matter if the main characters were male or female. In spite of what adults think, kids aren't always going to care, not unless it's fed to them by their own parents or other relatives.

I won't deny I've slipped and done the human traits myself (servos & pedes), but I have a very sharp-eyed beta who loves G1 and who pointed it out to me.
It's not that I think there's anything wrong per se, it's just I think that some go too far with it and apply things that I'm not going to go into here as I don't want to get into a debate which might get heated. Small things aren't that bad, as they likely would have picked up some human habits during the time they were on Earth (such as shaking heads or nodding), and I find nothing wrong if they kept the new modes after they left Earth. Them having those modes before Earth is what I question. Likely the flashbacks for both TFP and G1 were errors, as you suspect. Storyboard writers don't always catch those details.
I'll check out the other essay. You do have some interesting thoughts.
No, I agree with you there. One tiny thing that always makes me go "haha what?" is when robot characters are said to blink or "close their eyes". Cybertronians...don't have eyelids. Their optics might flicker in surprise, or need to be rebooted, or go offline. But blinking? Unless you've got a Beast Mode, this doesn't really make sense. Rolling their eyes is a little more of a grey area. The way optics are styled in G1 doesn't allow for a character to "roll his optics in exasperation", though I'm sure you could do it in TFP. In fact, I'm pretty sure TFP Ratchet HAS done it! And Arcee, too.
But that's just a tiny complaint. If you hop over to ff.net and click on any one of the stories obviously written by a younger fan, you can see this applied on a much larger scale. I've read descriptions of skin, hair, and even bodily functions. Sometimes it feels like the writers have forgotten that the Cybertronian characters aren't just giant humans. It's more funny than annoying, though.
