I'm happy you liked Malora. She's really grown on me while writing this :). And unless Arthur's reputation is completely backward, I can't imagine he wasn't horribly conflicted for much of his time as a Kingsguard. Unlike a couple of the others, he even broke from blind conformity to work with Rhaegar, sometimes behind Aerys's back. Which failed spectacularly, but it suggests he could venture from duty if properly motivated.
(although his view of loyalty seems almost Jaime-intense; from the fact his chosen advice for a newly-knighted 15-year-old is that blood is a symbol of a knight's devotion, to his willingness to follow Rhaegar past morality or sense).
