I think eveyone in the game very much acted without thinking- Joel was scared and trying to protect Ellie, and he didn't stop to weigh morals and debate, he just did. Abby was angry and sad and vengefull and she wanted justice- so much so that her anger stopped her from seeing any other way. Ellie was so caught up in her own anger that she gave up everything good in her life- even when she is horrified that she killed Mel, a pregnant woman, she can't stop.
They're all very human, and in this fic I'm trying to allow them room to be just that- human. Ellie is clearly suffering from PTSD and desperately trying to stop history from repeating, Abby is confused and she's come so far only to be begged not to hurt a man she had only seen as a monster, and no one is ina good headspace.
At the end of the day, forgiveness is so, so much harder than revenge.
