I hope I'll be able to write more about gender roles in dwarven society later on, because it's a subject that really interests me. But I definitely share your way of thinking--if such a small percent of the population is female, there probably would not be "women's work". And it certainly wouldn't make sense for someone like Thorin to wait six months to get his clothing mended or have to pay someone else to do it. Bilbo, on the other hand, has always been a gentleman of independent means, and while I wouldn't be surprised if Belladonna or Bungo taught him to sew, he'd much rather not do his own mending and spend the time reading instead :D
