Rusty has upper torso clothing that is made to be comfortable with his wings, but he is usually more comfortable without a shirt. In addition, not wearing the shirt makes it impossible to hide his modifications and makes the extent of them way more in-your-face. The first time he went wandering around shirtless on the ship was as much about testing the limits of how willing Piper was to have an extremely heavily modified person on board as it was about Rusty not considering a shirt relevant to modesty.
There is A LOT going on. Vectron canonically says that Rusty is more Vectron than he is himself in dig 1, and that's before the final instance of Rusty assimilating some Vectron stuff, so I spent a lot of thinking on what made sense to pile on with canon. The vents are based off the steamjump, which in this canon is closer to a mixture of pressurized air, magic, and a hydrogen peroxide rocket and not particularly comfortable.
The contrast between Dorothy's more obvious but much less invasive - and much more voluntary - modifications and Rusty's extremely extensive and invasive but more concealable modifications HAD to be written.
Dorothy...predates the widespread use of diesel engines. She defaults to "anything atomizable and flammable" and has a taste for lamp oil. Fen's more likely to put "Actual Jet Fuel" on the life support list than Dorothy. Fen is GOING to put Actual Jet Fuel on the list for Dorothy.
the code switching just makes sense honestly, another difficulty that dora has not realized is a factor: four centuries worth of outdated slang occasionally being sprinkled in there
