Comment on Everything We Hold Dear [On Hiatus until Further Notice]

  1. Ahhhhhh these chapters are always worth the wait so take all the time you need.
I did not expect the most painful thing from this chapter to be Fundy’s normalcy around torture and abuse. It was so painful to read that Fundy associates his father’s screams with him coming back.
Ghostbur my beloved! A lovely albeit sad inclusion of a trauma response. A sort of dissociation away from the situation. Can’t help but wonder if this version of Ghostbur remembers sad things, hence why Wilbur took the torture so that Ghostbur could remain innocent and keep Fundy happy. Instead of allowing Ghostbur to take the torture so that Wilbur could spend time with his son.
Your portrayal of Phil’s world coming crashing down on him was amazing. That everything he was working for in the past 10 years was essentially for nothing.
“He wants to go home. Or wherever that is.
He prefers hiding in the shadows watching Tommy clear out empty booths. He prefers listening to Technoblade talk about his day. He prefers anything to this. Isolation is torture enough.”
This paragraph was also quite painful. The allusion to Phil wanting to have never found Wilbur alive and in the state he was in. And that Phil would’ve rather lived his live avenging Wilbur.
While he does see Wilbur alive as a blessing, it’s also recognised as a curse (which is just *chef’s kiss*)
Maybe this SMP-002 isn’t a recreation it’s just rebranded? I’m pretty sure what Phil saw was an illusion. And no wonder Wilbur resents him because he just watched his dad fly away and leave him to the rats. Plus Wilbur has had 10 years to wonder why. I’m sure that’s warped his perception of his dad. Any happy memories he had before with Phil are no doubt going to be tainted because in his eyes Phil abandoned him.
I don’t think I’m on either Wilbur or Phil’s side. While I sympathise with Wilbur more, Phil has just made a series of bad judgements that he thought to be in good taste. I don’t agree with Phil’s decisions but he is trying his best. If he couldn’t save one son, why would he trust himself to be able to protect the other?
And of course Wilbur Soot has found himself a revolution.
It hurts but I’m loving this story. Although I cannot wait for the comfort and the amount of shit this family needs to talk about.

    1. Fundy is and will forever be the hardest and most painful character to write for me. I wanted to give him that innocent and carefree personality, but when you observe him more, you find out that he's been through a lot of things that a seven-year-old shouldn't have gone through. What hurts even more is that he doesn't know what he's experiencing isn't "normal" per say. His therapy arc will be harder to write than the rest of them.

Ghostbur, on the other hand, is a second personality/coping mechanism that is the aftermath of Wilbur's tortures. You'll find out more about him in the next chapter. ;)
