Hi! I do try and get through all the comments when I can, so I do read them.
I'm glad that you enjoyed the story; that's really all I, as a writer, can ask for - for people to enjoy my work and for it to brighten their day a little bit. I get what you mean, I think we've all been at that point in our lives where we're adrift and aimless, and kind of losing ourselves in fiction and fantasy to find an escape - or just find an inspiration for who we could be. And sometimes, that's also where we find ourselves and who we want to be.
I think on some level, that's why SAO resonated with me, as well - because Kirito is the kind of character who doesn't know who he is, and only finds himself when given incentive to and in the right environment, at least that's the way I imagined it.
And on some level, I think we all, us writers especially, take our characters and stories very much to heart. We wouldn't be writing fanfiction if we didn't, because at the end of the day, we don't make any money off of the work we put into it, nor do we expect to. We pour our time and effort into these stories as a result of the affection and passion we have for our beloved characters and stories and the journeys they went through.
In the end, fanfiction is wish fulfillment, homage, and dedication all rolled into one. We pay tribute to the characters, stories, and authors that inspired us, gave us dreams and stirred our imagination, and have them experience even more adventures because we couldn't bear to see their stories come to a close.
If I can pay just a little of that forward, then I'll consider that a job well done. Thank you for reading, and thank you for enjoying the story, I wish you all the best moving forward!
