So is it like an active thing where if it notices someone thinking about the holes it goes in and deletes trains of thought, or just a very detailed program left running in their brains, or a perception filter that covers even over memories?
It's a little bit of column A and a little bit of column C, mostly. There's a component that just deleted the existing memories, a component that smothers the emotions associated with what's missing, and then the active filter on all evidence of what the memories were about. A program is such an interesting way to put it, because the latter very much has an IF/THEN logic to it.
