That sounds great! While the fics that stay on the path to canon can be quite good, they tend to be disappointing. As if all the changes and development mean nothing. Going off track can be difficult and there will probably be some who would prefer it to follow the story they know, but making your own path can lead to an awesome story. It is also more difficult to write as you lose a lot of the "guidelines" you would otherwise have.
