Comment on A Dull Affair

  1. I love those interactions between Stannis and Jon when they have their private talks! It is a non-sexual relationship that feels very real and is quite touching (Jon needs a mentor and Stannis seems to do the mentor thing well. They both bring out the best in each other.)

    1. Thank you! I'll confess that my favorite scenes in this story (and in the ones preceding it) to write are those where Stannis and Jon simply talk to each other. It's great to hear that you enjoy reading them, and I agree that they can bring out the best in each other. One of Jon's problems in canon is that his mentor/father figures keep dying on him, and Stannis has never really had someone look up to him in that way. In a sense these stories of mine are trying to rectify that by giving Jon someone who can give him attention and giving Stannis someone he can understand and advise better than a daughter.

      1. Its hard for men to talk. We aren't supposed to. (Oops, thank you EmynIthilien for giving us this. I was out of town to comment before but this is really good.) We simply aren't. We have to be the rock. Thats fine, its the way I was raised to be. Its not a bad way. My little girl, talks about everything. My sons don't. If they do come up and ask to talk...its a big deal. I get into 'Father' mode with the quickness.

        1. You know, one of those things you always worry about as an author is if the personal character moments/family dynamics/etc come off as realistic. I'm never going to have any experience at being a father since I am not in possession of a Y chromosome, so it's relieving to see that many readers like the conversations that I've written between Stannis and Jon and their struggles to trust and confide in each other. Sure, I draw from my own life experiences for a lot of things, such as the idea that Jon would want to confide in someone who isn't a parent because, well, that's not who he feels comfortable talking to.

I appreciate hearing your perspective, and it seems like you quite enjoy being a father. All the best to you and your family!
