Comment on Gorthauro Estel

  1. Thanks, mellon!

Sauron has always struck me as somewhat of a Shakespearean tragedy figure, which is probably why he intrigues me so deeply. I am very taken with Tolkien's description of him in "Morgoth's Ring" where he talks about how it was Sauron's excessive love of beauty and order that caused him to fall and that in moderation those qualities are virtues, but Sauron let them consume him.

    1. Ultimately, Sauron wound up Morgoth's equal in evil, but nothing ever starts out that way. Even Melkor's evil was partly born out of his love for Eru and his desire to be like him. To quote a favorite reformed villain of mine, he was "gifted, grasping, and troublesome, as is so often the case with firstborn." Sauron somewhat reminds me of one of my favorite fictional characters. The Master from Doctor Who. The Master is evil and freely admits it, but there's still a clear element of tragedy to his evil. By the way, I highly recommend Doctor Who if you haven't watched it.

This fic really reminds me exactly why I like redemption arcs. If they're done well, they make for extremely fascinating stories.
