I just realized I was saving this for after I finished the canon. Which I have, though I didn't Get It.
The skull breaking is the perfect level of horror for this canon, somewhere between entirely banal and utterly terrifying in the tone of the narration, left up to the reader to figure out where the character thinks it lies.
