Comment on Understanding Does Not Presage Peace

  1. It took me a while to take apart the computer-like function descriptions that Hanzo was going through, but it is definitely accomplishing the goal of showing Hanzo panicking while making it not look like he is panicking.
Your analysis of this entire world continues to astound me.
I also appreciate that Hiashi figured out who Hanzo was talking to. Neji showed some of that same genius in the Chunnin exams concerning micro expressions and I am down for this headcanon that he learned some of that from his uncle. Hiashi's reaction makes complete sense to me. He may not have talked much with Hanzo, but he is observant and could probably tell that Hanzo's reactions to this stranger were out of the ordinary. Hanzo was trying to be discrete about it, but he also brought in two high-level shinobi known for their intelligence and more importantly, their ability in immobilizing threats, almost immediately into the conversation. I'm pretty sure the only reason that Obito didn't treat that with caution was because he was underestimating Hanzo and also being arrogant.
Also, Obito, really? Why the heck are you there? There are no benefits that I can see from coming into the middle of enemy territory and doing whatever the heck this is. The only motivation that I can conceive of is Obito just being petty, trying to remove a civilian from play and going so far as to try to play psychological games with Hanzo near the end of this chapter.
And Naruto continues to be the one suffering for Obito's pettiness.

    1. I’m gonna try to attempt to answer your question at why Obito was there based on my own understandings and assumptions (and hopefully Karmic will just excuse me and correct as he wishes).

So A) given all the uproar that has been made to the Uchiha and the village as a result of Hanzo’s various treatise on political science (that isn’t remotely hard to find out for a man who has ties and spies at the village, a direct line to Danzo, and can literally teleport with a plant assimilating alien assist)…which has essentially challenged many fundamental ninja beliefs and their preexisting way of doing things, it makes sense Obito would be curious and want to get Hanzo’s take on the ninja system because he probably also felt a bit astounded by Hanzo’s perspective.

So now comes to the timing part. Since the man can teleport and blind in super easily for reasons mentioned in the previous and current chapter, I saw two possibilities: 1) that he just happened to visit now and see the Uchiha are having a celebration and decide that infiltrating it and talking to Hanzo would be much easier than trying to accost the man somewhere as a random citizen of Konoha (which would draw unnecessary attention to himself given that Hanzo does have ANBU guards and other surveillance on him) and Hanzo would probably not be as receptive to random dude just asking him about the ninja system out of nowhere…or 2) Obito found out about this celebration and planned his appearance here more elaborately including his chosen identity. Either way, for reason stated in 1) using this gathering where lots of ninjas are present presents less risk to himself in approaching Hanzo + also gives him a better method of escape via what he’s doing right now like taking the clan heirs as hostage and so forth. It’s a pretty good plan. And he’s also very confident in his disguise since he’s an Uchiha and has plant DNA to blend in versus doing like a henge technique which more experienced ninja can see through with greater ease. So he can just pop in, have a convo with Hanzo, and leave with no one the wiser / or blackmail his way into escape with precious hostages.

And as we see it pretty much would have worked if Hiashi hadn’t been more OP than we thought? Lol Fugaku’s surprised outrage was hilarious but also proved to us that literally no one else aside from him + Hanzo figured it out and Hiashi probably wouldn’t have had Hanzo not drawn attention to his discussion by roping Shikaku and the others in. If they just had a regular one-on-one convo like Obito wanted then he probably could have gotten away with nobody knowing (since right now only Hanzo knows the extent of what his body can do when it comes to being a supercomputer).

Note where Hiashi said that Obito’s disguise was perfect, that his byakugan was fooled, so if he didn’t closely scrutinize Obito then nobody would find out hence it’s the setup for perfect infiltration and Obito would essentially risk little in appearing at this little gathering (based on his hypothesis).
