I am so glad you thought it realistic for Blanche to show up. I truly looked at it as you do—Blanche would be totally miserable at the office without Judith. What else does she have? The manuscripts that she needs someone else to read to her?
One of the things I love most about Judith’s character is that she stands up to Blanche. Even Alfred (what little we have seen of him) gives her a wide berth. But Judith doesn’t hide from Blanche’s moods or her coldness. In some ways she seems to relish in the fight.
Trying to incorporate some of the real world stuff in this universe—Updike, J.P., etc.—is challenging. I don’t want it to seem too forced. But they’re also very important to the lives of these women. They tie them together, of course, but also enrich their lives in interesting ways.
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I hope you had a lovely holiday and I wish you the best in the new year.
