Honestly, I couldn't say. I haven't worked out how the caste system would have worked historically because it's a big complicated issue that I know I'd get wrong AND I don't actually need to for these characters. (I guess their family would be the equivalent of Vaishya?) I'd be thrilled to hear any insights you'd be willing to share, though!

The Sruthi chapters' setting is vaguely hopepunk, though, so if a caste system does still exist, it's not nearly as immutable or oppressive as it might have been in the past.

    2. I mean I will be honest man the caste system is always oppressive. Like it's oppressive to the point where me despite being high caste is still oppressed in my own caste? Like it's absolute dogshit 😭

I mean, any caste system is inherently oppressive. I'm sorry you have to deal with that shit. I'm a loony leftist American who hates any kind of social stratification, much less the kind you're born into and can't ever change. I was just making the point that, whatever the in-world historical context of the culture the Kannars hail from, there's at least social mobility. You can work your way up, or easily move elsewhere in the world to where the caste system never mattered at all. You're not stuck. Not exactly utopian, but hopeful.
