    Thank you SO MUCH for this - if you’ve been speared through the heart, poor Maverick has been stabbed in the gut and hit by a freight train. I was hoping someone would pick up on the “tell me why he’s dead”, I’m really glad that came through. (Especially because I meant to make Rooster really fuckin’ uncomfortable with that one.) Phoenix is absolutely going to smack him when she finds out he lied to her (even by omission.)

    Something I really love about the Hangman-Rooster Maverick-Iceman parallel is that it’s not a pure 1:1 analog. Hangman’s cocky and brash and flies with his (very, very good) gut rather than by the rules, much like Maverick, but he fills Ice’s shoes in calling out Rooster on an approach to flying that might get them killed. And he’s right, but he’s opening his mouth in the middle of a situation he doesn’t know enough about. Probably because he very much wants Maverick’s approval, wants to be chosen for the mission, and hardly realizes he’s undercutting Mav’s authority. And then Rooster’s the tightly controlled one in the air, but stubborn as all hell with self-sacrificing tendencies that most definitely came from somewhere.

    Anyway. Yeah. It got hard to write the next chapter, too. Hondo has his hands full and Mav is going through it. I honestly can’t wait to give them a respite on the beach.
