-To understand how Sailor Guardians work in this universe, it’s important to remember a concept I’ve talked about before; practically all celestial bodies in the universe are imbued with a certain amount of Quintessence, the byproduct substance of Creation which, in certain circumstances, can spark the development of life and the presence of magic. Celestial bodies with abundant Quintessence are likely to develop intelligent life, and those lifeforms are then likely to be able to harness magic through their own biology, their belief system, by simply learning how to tap into the ambient Eldritch magic of the universe, etc. This intertwined relationship between magic and life can sometimes consolidate into a crystalline form, a unique physical representation of the creatures that developed on a given world, as if their essence were condensed into a physical singularity. The crystal often has a level of sentience, which is what comes into play here; when the survival of their progenitor species is threatened to the point that extinction is likely, this “world crystal” entity will produce a single champion through which a significant portion of the magic of that world is channeled, and the resulting being is what the galaxy knows as a Celestial Knight – what we on Earth call Sailor Guardians. -The Silver Millennium was a prehistoric civilization that originated on Earth’s lost continent of Lemuria; when it became spacefaring (way ahead of schedule, having discovered and reverse-engineered leftover Celestial artifacts), a large portion of their society left for the Moon and established a prosperous empire on the Blue Area of the Moon over the ensuing centuries. The war between Earth and the Moon, as depicted in the show, led to the destruction of both empires, all traces of which were erased through the combination of a certain Kwami imploding Lemuria, and the Inhumans eventually arriving and establishing Attilan atop the ruins of the Silver Millennium, which would once again be destroyed by the Gems arriving to colonize the planet, establishing their observation and control center there. -There are, obviously, way more Sailor Guardians in the Sol system than there should be, considering the only ones who followed the natural process were Sailor Moon in ancient times, and Sailor Earth in modern times – there is no life on Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, etc. This is an intentional mystery for later! -Celestial Knights are very rare (extinction events are, all things considered, not super commonplace), but they’re kinda associated with Galactus, of all beings. If the reason is not obvious, it’s because when the Devourer of Worlds comes to consume a planet, a Celestial Knight will often awaken and attempt to prevent it. To date, none have been successful. -You’ve technically already seen a Sailor Guardian in the Kverse, sorta – the very first She-Ra would’ve essentially been Sailor Etheria, created in a long-forgotten time of crisis. As you might imagine, things have really changed since then – the spirit of Etheria stuck around and developed into a cycle of reincarnation, both because of Etheria’s own brand (and abundance) of magic and because of First Ones meddling. -Physically speaking, you can expect Sailor Guardians to operate around Spider-Man’s level of strength and durability – they’re very powerful, but certainly not invincible or indestructible. Magically speaking…well, it varies a lot depending on the world and people they come from, but Sol’s Guardians are very high up there. The reawakening of the Sailor Guardians would certainly be a topic of note for the Sorcerer Supreme. -Speaking of, Naru was first active during the tenure of the Ancient One, and contrary to what you might believe, she did actually intervene! Not gonna tell you how just yet, but Doc Strange would know. -Naru received visions of the various foes that the Sailor Guardians faced over the years. Most of the time, she lacked any context, so you might imagine it was a bit terrifying. -I think, over the years, Naru probably realized that any relationship she might’ve had with Nephrite (no relation to Homeworld haha) would’ve been a toxic mess and should never have started in the first place, but she still went through that loss and grief, and it’s next to impossible to just ignore it. I left it in despite its very problematic nature because a) it’s a major source of her conflict with being Sailor Earth, seeing as she gained her powers too late to save him and b) sometimes, you can’t really help who you have or develop feelings for (but you can definitely choose not to act on them, I do not condone what could’ve been in this instance) -As with the El Tigre chapter, you can assume the characters are speaking their native language the whole time. I’ll be honest with you – unlike with Spanish, I’m not equipped to accurately reflect Japanese speech patterns, so I wrote this as if I was writing the dub. If and when non-Japanese speakers meet Japanese characters, I’ll strive to honor the way they would actually talk, but I can’t promise it’ll be super accurate, and I’ll probably try to have someone magically/technologically translate ASAP. -Umino’s a mutant! X-Gene and everything. His mutation is very minor – it just allows him to project the visual feed from a given piece of tech onto any sufficiently clear reflective surface (not just glass), and manipulate the software by doing the gestures he would with a mouse and keyboard on thin air. I included this both because I thought it’d be a fun nod to his nerdy little swirl glasses and because there simply just are Mutants out there with minor powers outside Genosha. -Obviously, Sailor Guardians don’t grow two feet in canon when they transform. I thought it’d be a fun tie into the She-Ra thing and also I like that it adds a sort of alien or etherealness to their transformation. Also probably helps with the glamour magic that conceals their identities. -I didn’t mention it before, but this chapter takes place just after the Chitauri invasion begins. Ironically, once the Avengers appeared on screen just after the chapter ends, it became clear that they didn’t need to go (though seeing as how the powers stuck around, she knows she’ll still need to learn how to use them)
Hold on: - arise in extinction level events - channel a planet’s/specie’s magic - power levels vary (so not all are on Spider-Man levels)
… is Vilgax the Celestial Knight of Vilgaxia? Or is the planet crystal some type of component for his curse? Also, do all Celestial Knights have the same type of outfit? Bc the idea of Vilgax in one is… I think “cursed” fits best.
Also, you said they’re best known for showing up to confront Galactus (intrigued in seeing how you handle him) but do they often show up for Black Order? Even accounting for the 1/2 quota, there’s the slow breakdown of society afterwards to consider as well.
I'll be totally honest here, since the Sailor Moon inclusion happened much later than my writing Vilgax's origin story, this obviously wasn't the case. It still isn't - Vilgax isn't a Celestial Knight by any means - but since I also didn't intend on expanding his origin story beyond "a cunning, vicious warrior cursed to embody the vengeance of his dead people", I think I can say that they likely used their planetary crystal as a catalyst or siphon to imbue him with the power of all those departed souls without much issue. More of a headcanon than anything else - I doubt it'll come up in a story - but there ya go.
Don't worry, lol, there's no standard uniform for Celestial Knights.
No, it wouldn't trigger against the Black Order. By design, the initial Decimation wouldn't imperil the survival of the species, and by the time a collapse happens there would be no Thanos et. al. to fight. Maybe one would spawn when they're on the brink of collapse to enforce order in the world, but not against the Black Order.
