Such is human nature, I suppose. We'd much rather gossip and speculate, come up with the most ridiculous and heinous theories about other people, instead of speaking frankly and face to face.
It's also, I think, partly due to Tony's reputation. If I recall correctly, none of the team took to him at once, not even Natasha who'd had the chance to observe him close-up while undercover in Iron Man 2. They all prefer to listen to rumours nad take his brash behaviour as face-value without ever considering why that sort of behaviour might be necessary by someone who was born into the relentless limelight, forced to have his every action observed and criticised by the entire world.
