    Wait so was the fire spirit always Azula or at least a part of her OR did the spirit become Azula become Azula because I am confused on that part.

      The fire spirit was always Azula. Essentially two parts of her soul have been severed but because of the curse the two parts of Azula's soul didn't recognize each other. At this point the two halves of her soul are so divorced from one another that they are refusing to accept that they are one and the same.
