Merlin, in Stargate canon, was an Ancient. I'm pretty sure that wizards are going to be the descendants of one or more near-Ascended populations that got stuck on Earth amongst humans and lost their technology and much scientific, cultural, and historical knowledge but not their powers, and possibly even pushed their powers further in the absence of technology. Likely a lot of them would trace back to the withdrawal from Pegasus and Atlantis.
That said, yeah, the story is moving slowly, and the slow rate of updates doesn't make it better.
